Kampanj för fri programvara i Sverige
I en tid då våra liv i ökande grad är beroende av teknik är det viktigt att vi överväger teknikens inflytande över oss och vikten av att säkerställa att tekniken inte används för att begränsa oss, utan istället för oss vidare på vägen mot innovation och frihet för alla människor.
Software Freedom Day (Dagen för fri programvara) är ett internationellt gräsrotsinitiativ som firar Fri programvara och Öppen källkod. Den infaller den tredje lördagen i september varje år, och i år är detta den 20 september 2008. Målet med firandet är att informera allmänheten om fördelarna med att använda Fri programvara och Öppen Källkod inom utbildning, myndigheter, hemma och i den kommersiella sektorn, kort sagt, överallt.
Svenska Linuxföreningen samarbetar med Föreningen Ubuntu Sverige för att engagera så många deltagare som möjligt i Sverige, och vi hoppas att flera organisationer ansluter sig.
Om Fri programvara och Öppen källkod
Fri programvara bygger på följande fyra friheter:
- Friheten att använda programmet till vad man vill
- Friheten att studera hur programmet fungerar och ändra det om det behövs
- Friheten att sprida programmet vidare
- Friheten att sprida förbättrade versioner vidare
För att friheten att studera programmet och ändra det, samt att sprida förbättrade versioner skall kunna realiseras måste källkoden (”receptet” till programmen, se faktaruta) finnas tillgänglig.
- Öppen källkod måste spridas för att undvika att dagens datoranvändare fastnar i en beroendeposition till olika mjukvaruföretag, säger Peter Forsberg, ordförande i Föreningen Ubuntu Sverige. Bland annat innebär Fri programvara att man inte är låst till en enda leverantör, att programmen är framtidssäkrade och av hög kvalitet. Eftersom källkoden är fri att läsa och ändra i kan vilket företag eller vilken privatperson som helst göra ändringar i programmen och anpassa och förbättra dem efter sina egna behov. Detta är inte fallet i majoriteten av de program som används av gemene man idag.
- Fri programvara är inte mindre spridd för att den är av lägre kvalitet, utan för att det saknas kunskap om den hos allmänheten. Det är detta som Software Freedom Day skall försöka ändra på, och vi behöver så många intresserade och engagerade människor som möjligt för att åstadkomma någon förändring, säger Mathias Friman, utformare av informationsportalen www.softwarefreedomday.se som avser att samla alla människor som vill engagera sig under Software Freedom Day.
Enligt IT-standardiseringsutredningen Den osynliga infrastrukturen (SOU 2007:47) är ”öppna standarder och format samt öppen programvara [..] viktiga komponenter för ökad konkurrens och bättre interoperabilitet samt lägre kostnader för offentlig förvaltning. ” Trots denna och andra statliga undersökningar är Fri programvara och Öppen källkod i mångt och mycket obekanta begrepp för den politiska och kommersiella sektorn, även om detta håller på att förändras.
Alla människor som gillar tanken på lägre offentliga utgifter, friare medborgare och förhöjd nationell IT-kompetens är välkomna att gå med i Software Freedom Days svenska forum och diskutera och debattera fri programvara och öppen källkod. Då detta är ett gräsrotsevenemang som förs på deltagarnas initiativ välkomnar vi alla sorters engagemang.
